Travelling to Medellin, Colombia

Medellin, is the second-largest city in Colombia and the capital of the state of Antioquia, the home of colorful flowers and exquisite tropical fruits. The city is surrounded by mountains with wonderful yearlong spring weather with an average temperature ranging from 18 to 28 Celsius (64 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit).

In the last 30 years, Medellín has been an example of social transformation and perseverance. Different strategies of intervention against organized crime and social investment have been effective on reducing crime and increasing the quality of life.

Medellín is safer than Chicago, Saint Louis, and Detroit in the United States. However, it is essential to keep in mind the following security measures:

  • Keep your belongings close and pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Avoid withdrawing money at night or alone.
  • Do not talk to over-friendly strangers.
  • Stick to safe areas and request a taxi after dark.
  • Do not put yourself in unnecessary risk.
  • Do not contact unknown persons over social media and do not arrange to meet

Passport

International visitors wishing to travel to Colombia must present a passport valid for at least six months. This document must contain free pages for its use. This requirement is very important even for visitors coming from countries where passports are not mandatory. If you are traveling within Colombia, please bring two photocopies of your passport and use the original only when exchanging foreign currency, as it is obligatory.

Travelers must complete Migración Colombia’s Online Check-Mig Form within 72 hours of boarding an inbound or outbound flight from Colombia. There is no fee to complete the form.

Visa

Citizens of some countries need a visa that must be processed at the Colombian embassies or consulates abroad. To check if your country requires a visa, click here. U.S. citizens do not need a Colombian visa for a tourist or business stay of 90 days or less, or for cumulative stays of 180 days or less per calendar year. If the visa requirement applies to your country, please fill out this form to process the visa request letter issued by Universidad EAFIT. Once the letter is issued, you can proceed with your individual online visa application.

Here is a visa application guide for this process. Please start your visa request as soon as you can. The process could take up to three months.

Next Stop, Medellin

The 4th Annual Festival of the Diaspora is heading to the City of Eternal Spring in Medellin, Colombia. After breaking attendance records in Rio de Janeiro during February 2024, we are expecting the largest festival in our 4 year history in Medellin!

Whether you’ve attended before or are a first-time festival-goer, we invite you to register today and experience the joy and diversity of our diasporic community.

Past Festival Events

Our beginnings start with the first festival taking place in San Juan, Puerto Rico at the idyllic Hilton Grand Resort. We kicked off our convening with more than 150 leaders from 46 countries.

The second FOTD in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, leveraged lessons learned from the first year to curate an unparalleled four day event during March of 2023 where over 200 leaders gathered at the Cartagena Centro Convenciones and took over the ancient city to celebrate, connect and collaborate.
